Accessible Learning
OpenMi Excursions is a student-teacher smartphone app that offers interactive and accessible learning through Australian Sign Language with captions.
Coinciding with 2012 National Week of Deaf People, OpenMi Excursions launched at the Werribee Open Range Zoo in Melbourne.
The technology was first developed by ACE in partnership with Victorian Deaf Education Institute and the Werribee Open Range Zoo to create accessible learning for Deaf and hearing impaired students. ACE aims to work further with VDEI to enable further access with the technology across Victoria.
Who will benefit:
OpenMi Excursions was designed to increase accessibility and learning outcomes for all students including those who are Deaf and hearing impaired.
Families, carers and grandparents of Deaf students can also enjoy the inclusive experience.
For Teachers and Students
With OpenMi Excursions, teachers can facilitate an excursion using a smart device and students can use the smartphones to interact with the teacher. Students can read information about a relevant exhibit and answer quizzes. Teachers can track students progress and upload group results to the web.
